This was posted on our local fan club website and it got me thinking...

Fellow Browncoats...

Please pardon the interruption. If, in my ignorance, I
overstep (or trip over) some code of conduct for
making contact with your group, it is only with the
best intentions (and, we all know what road is cobbled
with those).

I was inspired by what einaphets on SciFi.com's
Firefly board posted about getting a copy of the BDCE
for her hubby's fire station.

"Firefly for Firefighters" is the idea which has grown
from that small gesture.

Every community, in the US and pretty much anywhere
else I can think of, has at least one fire station,
most of them manned 24 hours. The firefighters there
are real life Big Damn Heroes, but, aside from the
occasional tragic occurrence, don't get much
recognition for looking out for every one of us, all
the time. As such, they spend a lot of time waiting
for trouble to arise, and, between station-house
duties and calls, have a good amount of time on their
hands.

Firefighters deserve the chance to become Browncoats.
Likely, many already are, but, many more are not.

That's where "Firefly for Firefighters" comes in.

Local Browncoat groups can get together, pitch in to
buy sets of the Firefly and BDCE DVDs, and, make a
gift of them to their local staffed fire stations.
Together, the DVDs cost less than $40.00US, so, a
group of ten Browncoats would only have to contribute
about $4 individually, per fire station.

I propose that, in the month of September, we all do
our best to get these two DVDs into the hands of as
many firefighters as possible. Locate all the fire
stations in your community, figure out your budget for
sufficient DVDs, then, call the stations to let them
know that your group wants to come visit and make a
gift to the station DVD library. Arrange a time at the
convenience of the station Chief or other responsible
party, to be sure you don't interrupt some important
activity.

When you do make your visit, it would be a great
opportunity to establish ties with the firefighters,
there. Many stations are involved in other charitable
causes, and, might welcome the assistance of our
enthusiastic numbers, when they do their own
fundraisers or fire safety awareness events. It
wouldn't hurt, at all, to offer that assistance,
especially if you have an organized group in need of a
purpose.

Be sure, assuming it's alright with the firefighters,
to get some pictures, when you visit. Please, post 'em
here,

or, on your favorite Browncoat community site, and,
let us see your local BDHs!

This is not only a great thing to do for the
firefighters, but, it also gets the signal out. You
know what happens when folks watch Firefly. A good
many smokin' Browncoats could arise from this, and,
we'd make 'em very welcome!

Come on, Browncoats! We are many, and, these folks are
everywhere! Won't cost more'n a couple bucks, each,
for most of us with friends, and, the benefits will be
lasting.

Love is what keeps her in the air... All our love.

P.S: Just one, additional note:

In the instances of there being MANY multiple fire
stations, local groups are picking those closest to
home. My local group, the Greenville Browncoats, is
turning this into a gift-basket deal, with popcorn and
cookies and such, along with the two video sets.

By the way, some folks have asked pro or con the BDM
vs. the BDCE. Either one is fine, but, the BDCE is
preferable, if finances warrant, as it is sales of the
BDCE which will have an impact on Universal's decision
to opt another BDM, which they have to decide by the
end of September.

Here is an image created by werellama of the
Greenville Browncoats which can be used freely with
this promotion, should you wish to spread the signal
around a bit:

Thanks, again, for your kind attention. This has the
potential to generate MANY more Browncoats (fire
stations being busy places), which is never a bad
thing, plus the public goodwill it can create. As
noted, a lasting positive relationship with the
firefighters can also be a shiny thing, indeed.

Can't stop the signal!

Now I don't know the individual who posted this, but it did get me thinking.
Donations handed in at the CSTS events and then handed out to the local community? That way each event can help the community as well as Equality Now.

I personally love the idea. Anyway to get more people watching the shows and falling in love as I did

Thoughts?

MN is trying to work something out along those lines at our Oct 5th screening which is more of a food drive and fundraiser for a local volunteer organization.

So far we're plagued with how to promote a double drive without getting too wordy. We're still going to try to do it, and at very least, we'll promote people taking matters into their own hands by donating to their local fire stations. Our concern has been keeping the focus heavier on people missing necessities and how our little browncoat community can help them, but at the same time, doing our browncoat thing by spreading 'versy goodness. Maybe it's wrong for me as coordinator to take the view that what we don't want is people to look at it as a choice of what they will bring to the event: food stuffs, cashy donation, or media for firefighters?

We may ultimately take up a seperate collection on a different date instead.

We could run a seperate drive online but our online community only represents about, in my estimation, 1/6th of our local browncoat community.
