The Halifax crew is back for our fourth year with the Carbon Arc Independent Cinema, in the Museum of Natural History auditorium, 1747 Summer Street. Our main event is moving to September this year, still consisting of two screenings of Serenity (6 and 10 pm) plus Dr. Horrible (at 5 & 9 pm), a silent auction, costumes, trivia contests and door prizes. Local celebrity Fat Apollo will be back to run the Evil Laugh Contest, and we're hoping to add in a Hero of Canton sing-along! Tickets remain $10, and a few lucky winners in our Twitter/Facebook contests will get a VIP upgrade including free drink/snack/priority seating. Online sales will open later in July, while paper tickets will be available a few weeks before the event (locations TBA).

The small size and community volunteer nature of our independent cinema has its perks, and one is that they are able to provide us with shorter evening rentals through the summer for Affiliate events. We'll be screening The Guild over the summer: seasons 1-3 on Friday July 18, and seasons 4-6 on Friday August 15. Tickets $5 only at the door, concessions available.

WOW, I cannot believe the event is upon us! We've got some great stuff for the silent auction from our lovely sponsors, including gorgeous artwork from Sophie Fong, an Independents flag, and the "Kaylee Special".

Just before the 6 pm show we'll be doing a crowd sing-along to a 'Verse version of "Barrett's Privateers", written by local entrepreneur Andrew Burke of "Starships Start Here." (This is a parody inspired by the "Ships Start Here" campaign that landed a major ship-building contract for Halifax.) The song, which contains the line "I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier," is popular around here, partly because it lends itself really well to being sung/yelled in large groups late at night in harbour-side bars. Andrew's written a version featuring Jayne Cobb because, as he put it, "Barrett's Privateers is exactly the kind of dumb-ass misadventure that Jayne would get himself mixed up in." We'll try and get some decent video.

Surprising how things can creep up on you.
