Please support The Harry Potter Alliance in their efforts to win $250,000 for charity in the Chase Community Giving contest.

Quote:
My name is Cheryl, and I’m with the Harry Potter Alliance. I’m writing to ask for your invaluable support as we compete to win $250,000 to continue our literacy, advocacy, and human rights work. We’re asking many fansites to post about this. Will your site be counted amongst them?

We are currently competing in the Chase Community Giving contest, which can be found here. www.hpaftw.com. The top prize in this contest is $250,000 and we need your help to make sure we get it. We are currently in first place, but our competition is gaining quickly and without the support of other fan communities we will not win. It is true that we are competing against many other deserving non-profit organizations who are advocating civil rights, human rights and many of the same things we are fight for. BUT the HPA is different, because instead of focusing on just one issue, we use fans like YOU to to make real change in our world. We rely on the power of fan activism.

The HPA uses themes from the Harry Potter novels to get people of all ages interested in world issues--a "Dumbledore's Army for the real world," if you will. Some of our campaigns include Accio Books, our annual book drive, which has collected more than 50,000 books in the last two years benefitting community centers in the Mississippi Delta region and a youth village in Rwanda; and Helping Haiti Heal, a huge multi-fandom effort bringing together HP fans, YouTubers, and many other fandoms and raising $123,000 for disaster relief in Haiti. Many of us are MASSIVE fans of Firefly!

We are an organization about the power of story. We want to show people what can happen when fans of great stories come together, and how stories can transform the world for good. One of the things we plan to do with the money is to form an online coalition of fan communities to work towards social justice. Bravery and a fearless willingness to fight against injustice are central to Firefly and what it means to be a Browncoat. These values are also present in Harry Potter, and they are values that we hope to emphasize with the HPA. . We can make a difference together! Harry Potter fans, Firefly, and more, all coming together to transform the world through messages inspired by the shows, books, and movies we love. Will you be a part of that movement with us?

We would really appreciate it if you would post the link on your site, alongside a little blurb with instructions to vote. Something like this would be perfect:

You can make a big difference with only a few seconds of your time. The HP Alliance is in 1st place to win $250,000 which will help us all do more to get books to children in need, and save lives through raising money for charities.

To vote, CLICK HERE, press the green “Get started to vote” button, hit “Like” (if you haven’t already), and then press “Vote now.” Encourage your friends and other fans to vote too!

The HPA has managed to do amazing things with little money. If we win this prize, the SKY will be the limit for us. Your support now, and in the future, would mean more than we can say. Together we really can change the world.

Let’s show the world what dedicated fans can do!

Except it's already over, and they won.

Great to hear! I received the email just the other day, so it must have been a last minute push from the HPA folks to get the additional support they wanted.

They actually had their press conference today at Infinitus 2010 in Orlando, FL, Andrew Slack and the folk from Chase met and they got their giant check. I've talked to Andrew in the past and he is so passionate about the work he's doing. I really cannot think of a better non-profit to win.
